for Lymphedema
What Is Complete Decongestive Therapy?
Complete Decongestive Therapy, often called CDT, is the standard approach used to help manage lymphedema. It is called “complete” because it combines several important parts of care: manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, skin care, movement, and education.
CDT may include:
-
Manual Lymphatic Drainage: Gentle, rhythmic hands-on techniques that help encourage lymphatic fluid movement.
-
Compression Bandaging: Specialized short-stretch bandaging used to help reduce swelling and support fluid movement out of the affected area.
-
Compression Garments: Properly fitted garments that help maintain progress between sessions and support long-term management.
-
Skin Care: Guidance to help protect the skin and reduce the risk of irritation, wounds, or infection.
-
Movement and Exercise: Gentle movement that supports lymphatic flow, especially when paired with appropriate compression.
-
Self-Care Education: Practical guidance on home care, swelling management, compression use, and ways to support your lymphatic system between appointments.
At Cocoon Lymphatic Drainage and Massage, I offer Complete Decongestive Therapy for lymphedema care, including manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, lymphatic education, self-care guidance, lymphatic taping when appropriate, and support with compression garment options.
My approach is gentle, individualized, and focused on helping reduce swelling, improve tissue comfort, and support long-term lymphatic health. If your condition requires additional medical management, wound care, or physician oversight, I may recommend working alongside your doctor, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or a specialized lymphedema clinic.
